Description
The Ancascocha Trek Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes is an incredible “off the beaten path” trail. It offers trekkers incredible views of beautiful Andean high Valleys, snow-covered peaks such as Salkantay (6,266m/20,551ft), Humantay, Huayanay, colorful lakes such as Salkantay and Ancashqocha, and the indigenous communities of Chillipahua and its namesake of Ancashcocha.
This adventure is for people who really want to experience nature and the Andes at its best; snow covered mountains, deep valleys, pristine lakes, animals such llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and encounters with local people such as herders.
Day 01: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Salkantaypampa- Pampa Japonesa.
Our private car will pick you up and drive you to Mollepata (2870m/9416ft) about 3 hours, where we have
the chance to buy supplies. From Mollepata we continue another more hour by car to Soraypampa
(3840m/12598ft). From the isolated village of Soraypampa we hike to Salkantaypampa where we have lunch.
After 3 hours of trekking, we arrive at our campsite for the night, at the base of the most majestic and impressing
mountains of this area, Salkantay Mountain (6264m/20551ft) and Humantay (5217m/17116ft). The campsite
is called Pampa Japonesa or Japanese Plain at (4600m/15091ft).
Day 02: Pampa Japonesa – Inka Chiriaska – Millpo – Yahuarmaky.
After breakfast, with mules and emergency horses we start the long hike, crossing several high
mountain passes. The first pass is Inca Chiriaska (4959m/16269ft), with incredible views over the amazing
landscapes of the area. From here, you walk along an original portion of an Inca Trail until you arrive at
the Tocto pass (4821m/15816ft), where the trail heads towards the majestic Salkantay Mountain. We continue
for the next 4 hours, passing over the Calacocha pass (4667m/15,311ft), the Cruz Casa
pass (4600m/15,918ft) and the Millpo Pass (4399m/14,432ft) where we descend to our campsite at Millpo. It
has been a day of unbelievable views and the successful crossing of 4 mountain passes. It is time for
afternoon tea and a siesta since you have earned it.
Day 03: Millpo – Yahuarmaky – Ancascocha.
After breakfast we walk for about an hour towards the Chusqenay pass (4630m/15,190ft) and then on to
the Rumi Inca pass, continuing on upwards to the narrow Valley of Yahuarmaky. After a rest and time to
enjoy the views, we start climbing again until we reach the pass of Aqocasa (4686m/15374ft) in about 1.5
hours. This mountain is a nice reddish sandy mountain and from the top of this pass (with the help of
binoculars), we get a view of the famous Inka trail, which leads to Machu Picchu. We can also
see Salkantay, Humantay and Huayanay Mountains and from way off, we can see Huacaywillka (Sacred
Tears). We get to enjoy exploring a small archaeological site called Inka Raqay. We descend from here
to Inka Rakay, and then climb up again to Huayanay pass (4630m/15190ft). After a final downhill walk of 3
hours, we reach our campsite at Ancascocha, on Ancascocha Lagoon (3700m/12139ft), a total walking time
today of 8-9 hours today. It is time to relax, have dinner and share about the sights of today.
Day 04: Ancasqocha – Chillca.
After a big breakfast, we walk down towards Chillca. From Ancascocha it is 2 hours of descent to Arequipa
pampa. We pass by small villages observing Andean valleys with their typical trees and flowers, such
as chachacoma, qewña, some orchids, begonias, and bromeliads that adorn the landscape. The descent
becomes easier towards Camicancha (2930m/9612ft) where our car will pick us up or we will continue to
descend to Chillca. We take the train around 4:00pm to Aguas Calientes where we will enjoy a celebratory
dinner and spend the night in a hotel.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco.
Bursting with excitement on your final surreal day, we take the first bus to Machu Picchu archeological site,
making sure we tour every nook and cranny of this New 7 Wonder of the World and UNESCO World Cultural
Heritage Site. The Citadel of the Incas, Machu Picchu,what an unforgettable experience. Your guide will
expertly direct you through the energetic ruins and its diverse main streets. Then on your own, you can wander
around the town squares of the world’s spiritual center of esoteric wisdom, as well as climb the intricately carved
stairways made of stone. Or you can stay still and find the peace within as you sit in the pure delight of the
moment.
If you wish to indulge in a few of the following activities on your own you can (not included in the price):
- Climb up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain to appreciate the beauty and magnificence of Machu Picchu from the views above (additional cost)
- You will be given some time to walk to the Sun Gate or Inti Punku. (Free of cost)
- Other optional activities in Aguas Calientes include a visit to the new local museum or to the hot springs (will be an additional entrance fee).
When you are ready, you will descend to Aguas Calientes, have a leisurely lunch on your own, and later on
board the Expedition train at 4:22pm for the return trip to Cusco stopping at the Ollantaytambo Station, where
you will catch our private van back to Cusco and your hotel, arriving around 8pm.
